About Martinsburg
Martinsburg was founded in 1778 and is located along what used to be the Cumberland Trail. The Cumberland trail was an important route during the Civil War.
The town is only a few minutes away from the famed Harper’s Ferry which was made famous when John Brown attempted to take the Federal Arsenal there.
The town was founded by Adam Stephen who named it after Colonel Thomas Bryan Martin. Martin was the nephew of Thomas Fairfax (who was the sixth Lord Fairfax of Cameron).
The city is experiencing phenomenal growth right now because so many people are moving out of Washington DC and Baltimore and relocating to the Martinsburg area.
Travel Martinsburg
If you are interested in history, particularly the history of the United States then Martinsburg is a real treat.
While it currently is home to the 167th wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard, what makes it famous is how close it is to several major historical sites.
Martinsburg is within a short drive of the aforementioned Harper’s Ferry, as well as the Antietam Battle Field which is in Sharpsburg Maryland and Shepherdstown, West Virginia (this was where the steamboat was first tested); Fort Royal, Virginia is also nearby which is where the famous Blue Ridge Mountains and Skyline Drive are located.
It is also close to the Shenandoah Valley, which was thought of as the breadbasket of the Confederacy and was the site of a major battle between the Union and Confederate forces.
History abounds in the Martinsburg area and travel Martinsburg is growing in popularity.
For people who love to visit historical sites and travel, Martinsburg is a great “home base” for Civil War enthusiasts as it is near many of the major sites of this war as well as being close to many of the areas that became famous during the early colonization age of the country.
Also, for people who love to travel, Martinsburg is a great example of a town that is just coming into its own at the turn of the twenty first century.
