Statue of Liberty Tours: Personal Tours Through the Statue of Liberty

After Sep 11, Statue of Liberty tours stopped, however the facility reopened in 2004, but with modified visitation reservations. To learn more about booking a visit to the Statue of Liberty, the best times to go and how to see the most while avoiding the crowds, keep reading.

Tickets and Time Passes

If you want to tour around inside the Statue of Liberty, then you have to buy a timed pass. These are only sold through Circle Line Ferry. Circle Line Ferry is the only seller for the $10 ferry ride to Liberty Island and the free Statue of Liberty tours offered by park rangers. Again, the park ranger tours are free.

Unless you have a guide, you can't enter the statue. However, you're welcome to ride the ferry and take your own walk around Liberty Island.

You can order your tour tickets and passes online, but check the website and with the reservation agents available on the phone before you give up on a particular booking time.

It's also a good idea to plan about a week in advance. You'll find same-day tickets almost impossible to obtain while booking a couple of days in advance will severely limit your options for available times.

Be at The Terminal Early

It's a major downside, but visitors should be at the ferry terminal at least two hours before their scheduled tour time. That means if you've booked an early morning (8:45) tour time, you'll need to be up and ready to go at the terminal by 6:45 in the morning. The first boat isn't until 8:30 though, but the ticket counter opens at 8.

Preboarding Security

Before you can board the ferry to Liberty of Island, you will be subject by a pre-boarding security check. They will examine your bags and person for any questionable items. Any bags larger than a child's pillowcase must be locked up in a locker.

Guided Tours

Your free guided tour with the park ranger is fast, but engaging. The tours take about 20-minutes to go through the museum. Afterwards, you are split into groups to explore the statue. Visitors are no longer allowed to climb to the top of the statue for security reasons. However, you can stroll around a lower-level outdoor deck.

Also, remember that once you exit the statue and the museums, you can't return. So, if you want to get the most of your Statue of Liberty tours, take your time, look at everything and don't leave the statue until your sightseeing is done.
