Recreation Travel Tips :: Manhattan Tours Manhattan Tours: Choosing Bus Tours of Manhattan
Custom Search
Guided, double-decker bus Manhattan tours enable visitors to see the sights at their own pace. Checking out the sights of New York - the largest city in the nation - isn't just a walk in the park. Popular attractions are spread all over the island of Manhattan and in the outer boroughs, causing many visitors to either limit sightseeing to one corner of the city, spend a small fortune on taxis, or plot out complex itineraries using public buses, subways and walking that can exhaust even the most enthusiastic sneaker-shod family. An alternate way for visitors to tour New York is to buy a ticket for a double-decker bus. Several established tour companies in Manhattan operate London-style double-deckers, which allow passengers to see the city and all its mayhem while riding above it. Most buses feature removable roofs, letting some passengers get even closer to the sounds and smells of New York, when the weather permits. To learn more about Manhattan tours by bus, including information on where to find the best companies, keep reading. Typical Itineraries In general, the NewYork bus companies operate three main itineraries: uptown, downtown and a grand tour that combines both. But passengers don't have to hit every site during one bus ride. A hop-on, hop-off policy lets visitors purchase one ticket that is valid for up to two days, allowing them to get off the bus at attractions that interest them and climb back on the next double-decker that comes along. They may even continue their tour on another day. Rates for the uptown or downtown itineraries average $20 per person, while the grand tours average $30. Children's discounts are available. Bus Companies * Gray Line New York In addition to double-decker buses, Gray Line's Manhattan fleet consists of tour coaches, minibuses, vans and replicas of 1930s-era motorized trolleys. Tours for clients who speak Spanish, French, German, Italian or Portuguese are available every day, while tour guides fluent in other languages can be arranged for groups. * New York Apple Tours This year New York Apple Tours is equipping its double-decker buses with the new Language Tour service. Passengers who purchase a four-hour Manhattan tour can don headsets and listen to the narration in one of nine languages. The driver is able to pause the recordings, so the narration is always in sync with the sights. Rates are $40 for adults and $24 for children under 12. * New York Double-Decker Tours Guides on these Manhattan tours deliver their narration in both English and Spanish onboard double-deckers and vans. The "Statue of Liberty" tour includes a bus ride to Battery Park in lower Manhattan, where passengers board a ferry for the statue. (Passengers will avoid long lines since their ferry tickets are prepaid.) Upon reboarding, passengers continue on their full city tour. Rates are $38 for adults and $26 for children under 12.
